tuesday in berlin

after working in the studio all day we attended "landreform" a performance by a group of artists that includes Dan Seiple, UD grad. it took place in the SkulpturGarden in Berlin Mitte, a wonderfully overgrown (see my earlier post about the prevalence of weeds in Berlin) and seemingly derelict context for contemporary art. in fact there are a number of pieces here that are a part of the Berlin biennial, and Dan runs the space. I love the Berlin aesthetic, I do. "Landreform" was a really whimsical and moving piece. basically there were 8 BMWs all tied together, driving around in a circle while Woody Guthrie's "this land is your land" played on the car stereos. occasionally the carousel would stop and viewers could get in and out of the cars. there was something super-pleasing about riding around and around in a dusty circle at this stately pace, listening to Guthrie. as evening fell (it stays light until 10PM here) they lit a bonfire in the middle of the circle. I thought a bit of the circling car scene in Herzog's "even dwarves started small" and of course the circle reminded me of the crop circle of sorts that must have been inscribed around the Schwerbelastungskörper after last week's event there.
